IronKey manufactures a range of secure USB flash drives, including the IronKey S200 and IronKey D200, which come in three varieties (Basic, Personal, and Enterprise) in many sizes including 16GB and 32GB. The three versions differ primarily in the software included with them; there are also some hardware differences that prevent the end-user from converting one version to another. All three contain the same level of hardware encryption and are structured with two partitions: an unlocker partition with software handling locking and unlocking, and a secure area. The Basic model has no extra software and is targeted at government and military users, while the Personal includes a portable version of Mozilla Firefox, Identity Manager (an account/password management software), and Secure Sessions. The Enterprise model is intended for corporate and government environments, and is completely configurable by an administrator. As such, it can contain any or all of the software on the Personal edition, along with anti-malware software, RSA, and OTP software. One of the key design features of the IronKey is a self-destruct mechanism which activates after the user enters his password incorrectly a certain number of consecutive times. On the Personal model ten times is the limit, and on the Enterprise model the count is configurable by the administrator, while the Basic model can be configured to disable this feature entirely. As a safety measure, the device is required to be unplugged and replugged after every three password attempts. After reaching the password limit, the device will delete its encryption keys and instigates a wear level pass on the drive, effectively making the device completely unusable. The IronKey S100 has passed FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validation, and the S200 and D200 have passed FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation.

All data stored on an Iron Key Personal drive is encrypted with high-speed military-grade hardware encryption. Unlike software-based encryption, this "always-on" protection cannot be disabled and is protected against cold-boot and brute force attacks. No one can access files stored on an IronKey unless they authenticate with the correct password. All encryption and password verification are performed in hardware, and it cannot be disabled by worms, viruses or other malware.

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certified

IronKey S200 series drives are the only USB flash drive validated to meet the stringent Security Level 3 requirements of the FIPS 140-2 standard. Additionally, IronKey Basic S200 protects data with strong AES 256-bit hardware encryption. High-grade memory and strong security also makes it an ideal platform for deploying virtual desktops.

Cross Platform

IronKey Basic works with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 without administrator privileges or the need to install any software or drivers. IronKey Basic devices also work on Linux and Macintosh OS systems.

Hardware-Level Key Management and Defenses.

When an Iron Key drive is plugged into a laptop or desktop computer, the user must authenticate with a password before data and applications are accessible. Unlike software-based encryption, the IronKey Cryptochip prevents encryption keys from being transferred and stored on PCs, where they are vulnerable. IronKey protects against brute force password guessing attacks by using non-volatile access-failure counters stored on the Cryptochip. If a thief tries to break into an IronKey and enters 10 incorrect passwords, the Cryptochip will securely erase all of the encrypted data with patent-pending Flash Trash technology. This ensures no trace of your data can be recovered from the device.

Iron Key drives come pre-configured with a portable version of Mozilla's popular Firefox Web browser for Windows computers. All data, cookies, and Web history are maintained locally on the drive. The optional IronKey Secure Sessions service protects your privacy on the Web by triple-encrypting all of your Web surfing traffic, and provides secure DNS services to help assure that you are not visiting a spoofed website.

Self-Service Password Recovery

If you forget the password to your drive, IronKey offers an optional online password recovery service. The service uses advanced mutual authentication technology to verify your identity, allowing you to recover your device's password securely.

Applications built right onto the IronKey help keep your personal data safe. The password manager keeps your passwords safe. Your passwords are securely stored in a hidden hardware-encrypted area using 256-bit AES, using randomly generated keys encrypted with a SHA-256 hash of your device password.

A secure copy of Firefox included with your IronKey encrypts your browsing session through a VPN tunnel to IronKey's Secure Sessions Service. It works by tunneling your entire web browsing communications through the Tor-based Secure Sessions proxy on your IronKey. The Secure Sessions tunnel connects over an encrypted connection to their network routing servers, which in turn route your traffic between a number of servers, and then eventually out to your destination website. This approach protects your identity and your confidentiality, encrypting and anonymizing your Web surfing on almost any network or VPN (virtual private network).
